The Bain defence expended a lot of energy establishing that Robin had a motive to kill his family, based on the allegation that he was trying to hide alleged incest with Laniet.  Although plenty of possible motives exist, the idea of motive was not used against David Bain by the prosecution.  It is to be noted that David Bain never corroborated the allegations of incest or the scenario that a confrontation had taken place.
